Grade 6 Language Acquisition

Mandarin Expectations: In order to succeed in Mandarin lessons, students are required to dedicate at least 15 minutes a day. 





Unit two---School Communities 
Key concept: Communities
Related concepts: Audience, meaning, patterns
Statement of Inquiry: A school community is considered as a part of your identity and an important place to build social relationships.

Inquiry questions:
Factual - What is a school community?
Conceptual - What are differences between your school and those in other countries?

Today, Grade 6 enjoyed a field trip to Sangrok martial arts training center in Oslo. The Grade 8 students kept a positive attitude and participated in activities related to Chinese Wushu martial arts.

Students have started their summative assessment this week. They wrote scripts for their short plays and performed their plays in groups. I recorded their voices when they performed their group work. Please enjoy.

This week students continue their learning about school communities. They have learned some new words, such as, 谁的, 书包, 谁 etc. And they also started to work together on their group work.

This week students have learned vocabulary about address, such as 在哪, 楼, 几楼,街,路, 在学校,在家, 小学,中学,大学。 Students have practised to form different sentences with these new worlds. Students are encouraged to practise with the websites of Quizlet at home.

This week students were engaged in different activities to review vocabulary from current and previous lessons, which allowed students to gain confidence in speaking and listening.

This week students have learned some new sentence structures, for instance, how to ask the address of their school or home. All students seemed enjoying the new word game.

This week students have learned new words about schools, such as 学校. Students also linked the new words to the knowledge they have learned, such as 在学校,在家,哪个学校,哪个老师, 哪个妈妈. Students are encouraged to practise with the website of quizlet at home.

In order to help students understand better the rubric and summative assessment, Grade 6 did peer assessment for their Chinese New Year poster work. It was nice to see most students work hard on it. After that they did end unit self-reflection.

This week, students have been practising the knowledge they had learned about Chinese New Year through different activities, such as competition games, word cards. Students really enjoyed these activities.

On Monday the school celebrated the Chinese New Year. Grade 6, 7 & 8 presented an assembly on the theme of Chinese New Year and after that they taught the younger kids Chinese New Year traditions with different activities. At lunch time, they tasted some Chinese food which they really like. Grade 6, 7 & 8 did a fantastic job. It was a very successful celebration and everyone had a nice time. A big thanks to their engagement.

Students took summative assessment and did self-reflection as well. Most students did a good job in their summative assessment.

These weeks students have learned to talk about their family members. Students also used new vocabulary and sentence structures to introduce their family members to their groups. All students were creative and enjoying the activities.

This week students have learned how to form a negative sentence in Chinese and different ways of forming question sentences. Students were required to make a dialogue in groups and role-play the dialogue with their classmates.

Grade 6 has learned all the initials and finals in Pinyin (Mandarin pronunciation). They have been practising writing conversations using pinyin. This week, students have learned to ask someone's nationality and say the names for various countries. Students can practise at home with these websites:

Students have learned quite a lot of pinyin this week. Hopefully soon they can read by pinyin. They also learned how to ask someone's age and their first Chinese song-the number song. This week Grade 6 have continued to learn greetings in Chinese. The students learned a few new Chinese characters and understood the basic structure of Chinese sentence. They practiced with different activities. In addition, students have learned how to count numbers from one to twenty.

This week, students have started to learn new Chinese words with stories. Stories encourage students to ask questions, and help them understand Chinese culture and memorize the new words. They have also learned to exchange names with others and practiced it with games.

They also learned Pinyin and four tones. Students were asked to practice at home with the websites (see below). This website offers Chinese Pinyin with audio. In addition, Grade 6 learned to greet people in Chinese.
